1882-1949. Bulgarian Communist, prime
minister from 1946. He was elected a deputy
in 1913, and from 1919 was a member of the
executive of the Comintern, an International
Communist Organisation. In 1933 he was
arrested in Berlin and tried with others in
Leipzig for allegedly setting fire to the
parliament building (see Reichstag Fire).
Acquitted, he went to the USSR, where he
became general secretary of the Comintern
until its dissolution in 1943.
